Prepare Children to Worship

Intentional preparation before worship and attention to the rhythms of worship helps children go from being observers to worshippers.

Here are tips for helping you worship with childreN:

  • Talk about your behavioral expectations during worship. (examples: at home, we can wear our PJs to worship; both in the sanctuary and at home, electronic devices are put away).

  • Encourage your child to use the bathroom before worship begins and bring their worship bag.

  • During worship, sing the hymns, pray, stand when invited to stand (this helps with wiggly bodies and minds!) Children model what they see, so use worshiping behavior yourself that you want to see in your children.

  • If you are worshipping at home, choose a spot for your worship space. Be consistent about where you sit each week for worship.  Talk with your children about how this is our “worship space” during the hour we’re together with our church family.

Return to worship week after week.

Children learn to worship by worshiping. Whether at home or in the church building, we, who seek to follow Jesus, are the church. Your presence in worship, even when it’s not in the church building, declares the truth that God is with us always and that the community of faith is united in Christ, even if separated by distance.

Build a Worship Tote Bag

Pick a tote bag that will be special for worship, add:

  • Coloring pages or a bible stories coloring book (2-3 pages per child/week)

  • Colored pencils (set a few aside in a Ziplock)

  • Wiki sticks or pipe cleaners

  • Playdough

  • An Etch-a-sketch or Magna-doodle

  • A small stuffed animal to hold during worship

  •  A story Bible

  • A picture book (switch out every couple of weeks)
