First Presbyterian Church of Austin joyfully announces its 175th year as a worshiping community rooted in faith, service, and inclusive love. In 1850, five courageous Austinites gathered in the Old Capitol building and—under the leadership of Rev. William M. Baker—officially established what is now First Presbyterian Church of Austin. On Sunday, May 25, the church will launch a yearlong celebration of its 175th anniversary, commemorating nearly two centuries of faithful ministry, social impact, and inclusive community in Austin, Texas.

Since its earliest days, First Presbyterian Church of Austin (FPCA) has embodied a bold and thoughtful faith that engages both the head and the heart. Rooted in a spirit of welcome, the church has long been a leader in social and personal transformation. During the American Civil War, FPCA aligned with the Northern Presbyterian Church—unlike any other Presbyterian congregation in Texas at the time—reflecting its deep commitment to justice and unity.

In the post-war years, FPCA, under Pastor E.B. Wright, became a place of reconciliation where former slaves and slaveholders, Union and Confederate sympathizers, and people of both faith and doubt came together in shared hope and healing. This inclusive spirit continues to shape the church’s identity today.

“We are honored to be part of Austin’s spiritual and civic history for 175 years. We’re still following God’s call to be a church where all are welcome, all stories are honored, and wonder is encouraged,” said Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Boone McLean, Pastor and Head of Staff. “We’ve worshiped in many places, but our mission has remained the same: to embrace God’s inclusive love, explore the gospel together, and walk into the future with hope and openness to change.”

The church will mark the start of this anniversary year with a community celebration on Sunday, May 25, themed 175 Years of Faith, Community & Wonder. The day will begin with a 10 a.m. worship service featuring special music and honored guests, followed by an intergenerational storytelling hour and a festive BBQ lunch with family-friendly fun.

Although the event is just around the corner, the 175th anniversary will be commemorated throughout 2025 with ongoing opportunities to reflect, reconnect, and reimagine the future.

From humble beginnings to a vibrant, multi-generational congregation, First Presbyterian Church continues to walk forward in faith, inviting all to experience God’s love and explore life’s big questions together.
