WANTED: Youth Group Food Volunteers!!

For those with or without Culinary School degrees, we want you! Our wonderful Youth Group, middle school and high school, is great at taking on community projects and learning more about God in their lives every week. Every week, those same youth could really use your support with food for Sunday mornings between services, and Sunday evenings as they meet in prayer and action. Typically we get about 15-20 youth and mentors at each get-together. Interested in supporting? If cooking doesn’t fit in your schedule, there’s more than one way to help out the group. To quote Pastor Sarah, “Anything is great for these kids!! They just need some fuel to keep them going.” Pick up from the market; Sloppy Joe fixin’s in a crock pot; juice and kolaches for breakfast – any and all food groups welcome. Presbyterian Children's Home and Services

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings! I have a couple things to share with you and I have included several links to our website. First, our children will be starting school next week; I have included a few ideas for how you can be involved in helping us make sure each child has a successful year: · volunteering to tutor one of our children on a weekly basis · providing dinner at one of our homes on a week night so the home parents can concentrate on school work · helping provide social activities (such as sport event or cultural event) · collecting new school supplies (pencils, pens, notebooks, markers, paper, etc.) and backpacks for the 250 kids currently in our care · sharing a skill or talent you have with a child, a family, or a home · making a back-to-school gift at www.pchas.org

First500, September 27

Countdown Begins to Third Annual First500 Now is the time to start thinking about what you want to do Saturday morning, September 27, for our third annual First500 event. This event is FPC’s annual fall outreach to our community and our church, with our goal of giving a collective 500 hours this one morning. We’ll gather at 8:30 a.m. for worship, then begin working on our individual projects, followed by a heavenly lunch provided by the FPC Holy Smokers. Our projects this year (and the FPC saint leading each) are: • Mobile Loaves and Fishes (Cecil Jones), assembling 1000 packets of snack food for homeless folks. This is done at the church, and children love to participate. Lots of hands needed here. • Faith in Action (Ken Wilson, reaching out to our homebound. • Caritas (Linda Doehne), building packets of beans and rice, adding a recipe, and learning about all the good Caritas does for people needing help. Children can help at Caritas. • Susan Koman Foundation (Joni Wackwitz), all ages and abilities assembling information packets or key chains to help promote the Race for the Cure; at the church. • Manos de Cristo (Susan Roberts/Helene Treat), at Manos, help sort and organize food and supplies and bag toiletries. This is a family friendly project. • Austin Parks Foundation (Louise McGinley), cleaning at the Bull Creek Greenbelt; perfect for people who like to be outdoors in hot weather! • Austin Public Library (Stephanie Rodriguez) is opening a used book store and needs people to help sort and label books. • Capital Area Food Bank (Laura Castleberry) is a chance for jr. high and sr. high youth to learn how the food bank operates and to help with all parts of the operation. • FPC Building and Grounds (Roger Drake) needs all ages to help tend the garden, paint doors to the sanctuary, and bring cartons of old documents from the basement storage for shredding. (Did you know we have a basement?) • Ronald McDonald House (Sarah de la Fuente), ten FPC folks are needed to cook and serve lunch to 20 residents. No cleanup included! Good family project. • Holy Smokers (Joe de la Fuente), will cook and serve their world-famous barbeque as folks return from working their projects. Men with tall tales to tell are especially needed. For more information on the event or specific projects, call Nancy Baker at 252-9557, or e-mail nancyabaker@gmail.com. “It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.” Mother Teresa

IHN

IHN—As part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), we will host four homeless families in our church during 2008.  They will stay at our Church on three separate occasions for one week each.  Our scheduled weeks begin February 3, April 27, and October 12.  Please mark these weeks on your calendar if you wish to participate in this worthwhile program.  We need sixty volunteers for each of our host weeks, so as you can see, it is an enormous commitment.  It is also a wonderful way for us to show gratitude for our many blessings.  Our first of two scheduled sign-ups for our February host week will be in the FPC narthex on Sunday, January 6 at 9:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and again on the following Sunday, January 13, at the same times. We are also looking for “gently used” queen size sheet sets, blankets, towels and four new pillows or pillow covers or both, to complete our linen closet.  If you would like to donate these items or money to purchase them, please call Deanna Wilson at 346-1304. The IHN Team: John Rebok, Deanna Wilson, Faith Edson, and Don Wolfe, Coordinators.
