ADULT EDUCATION AT FPC
Summer Movies at FPC
During the month of August, FPC will be conducting a four-week series presenting a Christian perspective of contemporary film. We'll be using clips from recent popular films to inspire discussion.
**PLEASE NOTE: We will not be watching the entire movie. Instead, we will be viewing clips from the movies to inspire discussion. You may want to watch the movie prior to attending the class, but it is not necessary.
August 17th - Amazing Grace– themes such as repentance, forgiveness, and social injustice are explored in this film about the historic plight of William Wilberforce to abolish slavery and the slave trade in England.
Primary questions:
1. What role does religion play in politics and social injustice?
2. Does forgiveness compel us into action? Should it?
3. Which modern-day issues are we willing to work to change and
why?
4. What does the bible say about our freedom in Christ and our
obligations as Christians?
AUGUST 24th – A fourth movie will be chosen by the class to be discussed on this date.
BOB LIVELY CLASS, Upper Rissman, Bob Lively A new series, "Following Jesus," begins August 3. Bob Lively explores what it really means to follow Jesus. The class will use the book "Rabbi Jesus" by Dr. Bruce Chilton.

Education Spotlight On:
The Scripture Class
The Scripture Class will resume its study of the letters of Paul the Apostle on Sunday, September 7th. The members will again take up the letters, which we know as First and Second Corinthians. This year's chapter by chapter, verse by verse study will begin where the class ended its studies in the Spring: I Corinthians 15. This chapter contains the earliest Christian teachings about the good news of the Resurrection. As the members of the Scripture Class work their way through these writings, they once again will be led by our own Dr. Kenneth Warren Hamstra (an Adjunct Professor at St. Edward's University). Dr. Hamstra will work directly from the original Greek texts, and those class members who have even some acquaintance with New Testament Greek are encouraged to bring their own copies of the Greek New Testament and share their own insights and questions. The members who don't read Greek are encouraged to bring their own favorite translation of the New Testament to compare that translation with a literal reading of the original text. Many members of the Scripture Class have additional duties in our congregation as well as personal responsibilities, which make it impossible for them to attend each and every Sunday. Any prospective member of the class with similar time constraints is encouraged to join those others who attend as frequently as their schedules will permit.
Fall Sunday School 2008
Sundays 10am-11am
In response to information gathered from the “spiritual path survey”, the Adult Education Ministry Team is pleased to offer the following educational opportunities.
We hope that you will prayerfully consider attending one of the classes listed below.
A note about adult education at FPC: At First Presbyterian Church, we offer different types of adult education classes. Classes typically fall into one of two categories – lecture or discussion. Please note that in either type of class class, you can participate as much or as little as you are comfortable. J
Scripture Class – Resumes September 7th
The Scripture Class will resume its study of the letters of Paul the Apostle, which we know as First and Second Corinthians. This year's study will begin at I Corinthians 15. Bob Lively’s Class - "Following Jesus"
This class consists of part lecture by Bob Lively and part individual sharing & discussion. The two texts to be used are “Rabbi Jesus” by Bruce Chilton and “The Call to Conversion” by Jim Wallis.
Next Steps Class – Resumes September 7th
During the month of September, Pastor Terry will be leading the class, continuing with the book, “The Secret Message of Jesus” by Brian McLaren. Additional books will be available, since this is one of the more popular topics in recent classes. We will spend September discussing part 3 (Imagination).
Next Steps Class - October 12th – November 16th
Mike Murray will be presenting a 6-session class focusing on the Great Ends of the church (Welcoming, Worshipping, Growing and Going). In it, members will explore such issues as:
* What is “welcoming” REALLY all about?
* What does worshipping have to do with “worth-ing” or valuing?
* How, in fact, do people grow in the relational, vocational,
spiritual, and emotional aspects of their life?
* What is a “call”? How do we respond to it?
Coffee Talk – Begins September 7th - This class is geared towards young adults, both married and single, who would like to join in fellowship with one another over a cup of coffee and good conversation. The class will include both fellowship days as well as viewings of Rob Bell’s “Nooma” DVD series with conversation about the themes that these short movies present. Participants in this class can expect to become well connected with other young adults in the church and to engage in meaningful conversation about biblical and theological themes as well as conversation about life and its joys and challenges. Marci and Jim Shrull, leaders.
The Joy Class – Christian education and fellowship for developmentally challenged adults. Meets in the Parlor.
